The Unlikely Super Achievers Personal Stories

As an Integral part of our 30+ year research, we collected as many "personal stories" on the "Unlikely Super Achievers" as we could. Some came from other researchers, academic & otherwise, some from newspaper & magazine articles and some from books on famous people. Although they all provided very useful information, they all lacked the "Key" Pivotal Ingredients, the "Nuts & Bolts", that transformed their lives.

So we began to try for "personal interviews". As you might imagine, these people were not very receptive to exposing parts of their lives that, for some as you will find out, was very painful. Since we needed the data much more than the verification, we agreed to "Off the Record" interviews under penalty. What follows are condensed representative Unlikely Super Achievers Personal Stories 1 each from a Male/Female, childhood & adulthood discovery.

Childhood Discovery (male- currently CEO of a large HiTec Co.)

"After much protestation, I've agreed for this interview "Off the Record" & with penalty as specified, because I agree that this research could prove very helpful to others. I was a third child with an older brother and sister. My earliest childhood recollection is that my mother was the only one that liked me. My father seemed to be always saying "why can't you be like your brother and sister!" and my siblings seemed to ignore me. My siblings are very bright, bubbly and outgoing, whereas, I was a shy, chubby non-descript kid. They used to jokingly say I was their 'retarded' or 'geeky' brother. I had no interests or self esteem, no real friends, did badly in school, I felt really useless as a human being and terrified to try anything for not wanting to fail again.

Then one day while reading a futuristic comic book, something caught my interest, a silly little game a stranded astronaut played to keep from going nuts. As I also played a similar but much less intricate game off and on, I began to play this game at least once a day. I became so good at it that I could accurately predict the evolution of the game but dared not tell anyone for fear they would laugh at me for playing this silly game. Than in a particular case where the game in the story went in a different direction than what I thought it should go, I wrote the publisher with my ideas. I never did hear from them but soon the game went in the direction I had suggested. This, I now believe, was the turning point in my life for it gave me so much joy and self esteem that I never had experienced before.

My mother noticed the change in me, but that was to be expected, then my siblings and father began to make positive remarks of my transformation. But these were still relatives. Not until schoolmates did no longer mind me hanging out with them did I dare begin to believe that people could really like me. The clincher came soon after when a girl I liked asked me to go with her at a school dance - wow!

Contrary to what most would think, I have no particular High Tech skills, my strengths are the ability to visualize future trends and bring people together. I still play this "silly" little game every day because it gives me tremendous self esteem knowing that I am very, very good at it. It probably hasn't 'directly' led to my being a CEO of a large High Tech Co. but I know I would not be one without the transformation and the great self esteem it has given me!

Childhood Discovery (female- formerly CEO of a large Cosmetic Co.)

When I first received your request to be part of your research looking for the Key to the success of "Unlikely Super Achievers" like me, I had real trepidations. I feared exposing for all to see my lack of Managerial Talent for someone who has headed a major corporation. But your project intrigues me for it has the potential of helping others who are in the same position today I was many years ago.

My personal epiphany came when I was 13 years old. At the time I was an obese and acually aware of it and with many other failings a girl of that age feels wrong about her. My only school activity was with the Drama Club and fortunately so for one day after factional fight everyone resigned and I was drafted to take over. Bringing the two groups back on board revealed that I had this special talent of being a good listener and finding common ground.

The Play was a huge success and I was toasted for bringing it off. I soon joined other groups and had the same success, my weight dramatically dropped that at 16 I was chosen the school and district "sweet 16". I began to Model for the Co. I eventually became the CEO, life was a continuous ball. At 22 after graduating from college with a degree in Fine Arts, I was hired by my Co. in the Fine Arts Department. At the same time my Modeling Shoots became less and less - I had not realized that at 22, I was old, washed up! Depression set in and with it the return of my Obesity which of course meant the definitive end of my modeling career. This, in retrospect, was exactly what I needed to re-discover the thing that gave me this wonderful ride, however short.

Again, another work situation, about 2 years later, resurfaced my special talent that I had forsaken for the last 6 years, relying solely on my Beauty Queen Looks. Our Co. was going through a Major Restructuring that created huge turf wars that threatened the very foundation of the company. I managed to get our department to formulate a cohesive workable plan that was well received by management. They promoted me to the Restructuring Task Force - the beginning of my very successful Management Career.
